Lighthouse Trip to the Michigan Thumb

I saw 13 lighthouses this weekend in the "Thumb" area of Michigan. I flew into Detroit, and met up with my friend Katie, and we took a lighthouse road trip.

Friday (6/12) we visited the Tawas Point Lighthouse. Friday night we took a cruise out to the Charity Island Lighthouse and had a fabulous dinner. Fresh Perch. Ginger garlic beans. So good! The Charity Island lighthouse is not open to the public. But it is also not closed. We were told that "most prudent people don't climb to the top." There were a LOT of mosquitos there, but it was still a fabulous trip. We also got a great view of the Gravely Shoal lighthouse coming back.

Saturday we saw the Port Austin lighthouse at a distance and walked around the Farmer's market and festival in town. The Point Aux Barques lighthouse is only open for special occasions, and we happened to be there and were able to climb to the top. The Harbor Beach lighthouse was also a distant view. We also saw Port Sanilac and Fort Gratiot for a total of five lighthouses on Saturday, plus the Lighthship Huron. Saturday night we opted to go the theater and watch the Star Trek movie, which neither of us had seen before and definitely enjoyed it!

Sunday we attended church in St. Clair, Michigan. I told Katie that maybe she would meet a cute boy there. Interestingly there was a seemingly single guy who looked to be our age sitting a row behind us. Unfortuantely, I couldn't get Katie to introduce herself, so there was no connection made there. Oh well. Sunday we drove along the shores of Lake St Clair, adding 4 more lighthouses to our total for the weekend. Peche Island, Windmill Point, William Livingstone Memorial, and Pelee Passage (ON). We saw people fishing everywhere we went. Sunday night we shared pictures, and enjoyed watching Annie Get Your Gun.
