LDS Films

On September 8, I had the opportunity to watch the movie Emma Smith: My Story. We rarely get LDS movies in the area, so I like to go support them when I can. I think the movie was really well done. A lot of the material seemed very familiar to someone who is fairly aware of the LDS Church History.

I can get very emotional when I hear about Joseph Smith. I have a strong personal connection between Joseph Smith and Devin's death. One of the reasons was that our Stake Choir put on a production of Joseph Smith, The Prophet in late 2005. The music brought a lot of comfort and perspective at a much needed time in my life.

As with many prophets of God, there are parallels between the sacrifices that Joseph Smith had to go through, and the mission of our Savior Jesus Christ. Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son... his son Issac whom he had waited much of his life for, and through whom blessings of posterity were promised. Lot was asked to endure all sorts of loss and suffering, that he might prove his faith in the Lord under all circumstances. The prophet Joseph Smith was falsely accused, experienced much personal grief, and ultimately gave his life. From what I can tell, the movie is no longer in theaters, but I would definitely recommend it!

I watched the movie Forever Strong this weekend. It is not at all about the LDS church, but it is about a Rugby team in Utah, which I think is why I heard it advertised. I think the movie was really well done, inspiring, and pretty clean for some of the other PG-13 movies I've seen lately. I think it is unfortunate that the film has not seen a wider release. I was able to find a friend to go with who happens to have played rugby, and knows Coach Larry Gelwix, so that was an added bonus!

I hadn't even heard of the Emma movie...I definitely would be interested in watching it sometime.

I have a friend who went to the school where that coach taught, so I had heard of it. Who knows if it will ever make it to Iowa though!!!
